Community Awareness Campaigns on the Rights of Children with Disabilities

OSNET conducts community awareness campaigns on the rights of children with disabilities to promote understanding, inclusion, and equal opportunities for every child. Many children with disabilities and their families continue to face stigma, discrimination, limited access to education, healthcare, rehabilitation, and other essential services. Community awareness helps address these barriers.

Through these campaigns, OSNET provides parents, caregivers, teachers, community leaders, and the wider community with information about the rights, abilities, and needs of children with disabilities. The campaigns encourage communities to recognise that disability should not prevent a child from accessing education, healthcare, rehabilitation, protection, participation, and other opportunities.

The campaigns also aim to:

• Promote early identification and referral of children with disabilities.
• Reduce stigma, discrimination, neglect, and harmful misconceptions about disability.
• Encourage parents to seek appropriate education, rehabilitation, and support services for their children.
• Promote the right of children with disabilities to inclusive and quality education.
• Empower parents and caregivers to advocate for their children’s rights and needs.
• Encourage schools and teachers to create accessible and inclusive learning environments.
• Mobilise community leaders and service providers to support children with disabilities.
• Increase community understanding of child protection and safeguarding.
• Promote the participation of children with disabilities in family, school, and community activities.

Through these awareness campaigns, OSNET seeks to create communities where children with disabilities are respected, protected, included, and supported to reach their full potential. The campaigns complement OSNET’s teacher training, home visits, outreach, rehabilitation, and early intervention programmes by addressing the social and environmental barriers that can prevent children with disabilities from fully participating in society.
